Ger Districts
Ulaanbaatar has faced increasing challenges in its housing sector as the population has boomed in recent years. Nearly 60% of the city's population lives in the sprawling ger slums surrounding the city. These ger districts have poor infrastructure and a low standard of living. Running water is often unavailable, toilets are simply trenches in the ground, road conditions are terrible, and they are not connected to the central heating grid, meaning the residents must burn excessive amounts of coal and wood in the winter to warm their homes. The combination of these issues leads to massive pollution, unsanitary conditions, and a standard of living that is unacceptable for the citizens of Mongolia.
MISED is searching for an intelligent way to organize these unplanned communities, by building low-cost, sustainable housing with an intelligent design and proper infrastructure.
