In 2000, The United Nations issued the Millennium Promise, vowing to end extreme poverty worldwide. They formulated 8 develpoment goals that need to be accomplished in order to achieve the Millennium Promise. These goals are to:
- Eradicate Extreme Hunger and Poverty
- Achieve Universal Primary Education
- Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
- Reduce Child Mortality
- Improve Maternal Health
- Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
- Ensure Environmental Sustainability
- Develop a Global Partnership for Development
The UN acheives these goals through Millennium Villages, sites where they implement simple technologies to vastly improve living conditions. The UN has initially targeted sub-Saharan Africa, site of the most extreme cases of poverty, in implementing these goals. But Mongolia also has sites that could also benefit from the Millennium Development Goals. Part of our research is directed to finding a suitable site to establish a development modelled on the Millennium Villages and building it to improve the living conditions there and lift the residents out of extreme poverty.
